Springfield, Missouri is home to a vibrant artistic community. This exhibition highlights and celebrates the creativity of our community focusing on artists living and working in the many neighborhoods that make up our city. This exhibition not only concentrates on the artists on display but also their neighborhoods and what it means to live and work creatively in Springfield.
The exhibit will rotate every six months; the fourth and final exhibition features work by 11 artists from seven neighborhoods located in City Council Zone 4 and will run through October 20, 2019.

The Springfield Art Museum’s permanent collection contains over 10,000 objects in nearly all media. The works selected for this exhibition were chosen for their ability to reveal the ways in which artists respond to and reveal our cultural identity as Americans. There is no singular or fixed American identity. American art and history is shaped by multiple perspectives, stories, and experiences, and as such, this exhibition aims to present a multiplicity of views within the wider context of historical moments. The exhibition includes 75 works from as wide an array of artistic voices as possible within our current collection, including even more works by women, people of color, Native Americans, and LGBTQ+ communities. This exhibit includes major work by George Caleb Bingham, Asher B. Durand, Jackson Pollock, Wayne Thiebaud, and Alison Saar, among many others.

For the last two years, the Museum has partnered with Missouri State University to showcase work by students pursuing their Master of Fine Arts in Visual Studies. This year’s exhibit serves as the “thesis exhibition” for four
graduating students: Ainura Ashirova Barron, Shen Chen Hsieh, My Que Luu,
and Xuehua Jin, who have all previously exhibited in previous MSU MFA Showcase exhibits. The four international students will exhibit primarily two-dimensional works including paintings, prints, watercolors, and collage.

Nick Cave is a multi-disciplinary artist working between the visual and performing arts through a wide range of mediums including sculpture, installation, video, sound, and performance. He is well known for the "Soundsuits" series, sculptural forms based on the scale of his body. This exhibition will feature a focused selection of "Soundsuits," pulled from both private collections and the artist, courtesy of Jack Shainman Gallery, New York, as well as an example from the "Tondo series," and the video work "Drive-By." Funding for this exhibition is supported in part by an award from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Missouri Arts Council, a State Agency.
